If so, you may have varicose veins.

Varicose veins are common and affect approximately 1 in every 4 American adults. It is often seen after pregnancy, in lifestyles with heavy lifting or prolonged standing, or can even happen in young people due to family risk factors. There are many misconceptions on causes and treatments. Most importantly, varicose veins is a treatable condition that cause significant pain and discomfort.

At Vanishing Vein Northwest, we are here to help you better understand what is happening to your legs and offer treatment options.

What cause varicose veins?

Blood flows all over our body, including all the way down to our legs. Blood then returns from our toes and feet back up to the heart, and which can be 4-5 feet higher (when we are standing up)!

Veins are blood vessels that help push blood back up to the heart. But with time and pressure, they have valves that can malfunction and leak, and blood then goes in the wrong direction and builds up in our legs. This causes the veins to enlarge and become visible on the skin, and the leg to feel heavy. Over time, the accumulation of blood can irritate the leg, and cause pain and itching. In severe cases, they can even cause skin breakdown and result in an ulcer, or possibly rupture and bleed.
